Book 1
Mika squeezes a whole cup of soap into the dishwasher. By evening pink foam is pouring out under the kitchen door, and Mommy slips over in it. Nobody is scolded and nobody is the bad guy. The family mops up together and works out what went wrong. This one was painted by hand, in gouache, by Rebekah Brenneman.

Book 2
Mitzy has waited a whole year for Biscuit, and she loves him so hard that he hides under the couch. She does not understand why. Daddy sits down on the floor beside her and tells her that too much excitement is a lot, even for someone who loves you. So she tries waiting instead, and it works.

Book 3
Mitzy has ten brand new sparkly markers and she does not want to give one to her brother. Her mother does not make her. She sits down beside her, says she feels the same way about her own good scissors, and tells Mitzy she can just think about it. Mitzy decides by herself, and the one she picks to give away is her favorite.

Book 4
Tonight is the night before the first day of school and Mitzy's tummy is full of butterflies. What if she cannot find her classroom? What if nobody sits with her at lunch? In the morning Mrs. Trala the owl says she has a job that needs doing, and asks if she may give it to Mitzy. The job is the name tags, and carrying the basket takes her over to the cubbies, where a small turtle is standing on his own. By lunch there are four of them at the table.

Book 5
Mommy turns off the light and the room goes very dark. The shapes on the wall are not shapes Mitzy knows. Mommy comes back and sits on the edge of the bed, and she does not turn the light on. She says she did not like the dark when she was little either, and that what she did was give the shadows names. So Mitzy looks at the wall for a long time. There is a bunny. There is a very silly hat. There is a long wavy one she calls the noodle.
